In this Chinese name, the family name is Chern (Chen).

Shiing-Shen Chern (; Chinese: 陳省身; pinyin: Chén Xǐngshēn, Mandarin:[tʂʰə̌n.ɕìŋ.ʂə́n]; October 28, 1911 – December 3, 2004) was a Chinese American mathematician and poet. He made fundamental contributions to differential geometry and topology. He has been called the "father of modern differential geometry" and is widely regarded as a leader in geometry and one of the greatest mathematicians of the twentieth century, winning numerous awards and recognition including the Wolf Prize and the inaugural Shaw Prize.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7] In memory of Shiing-Shen Chern, the International Mathematical Union established the Chern Medal in 2010 to recognize "an individual whose accomplishments warrant the highest level of recognition for outstanding achievements in the field of mathematics."[8]

Chern worked at the Institute for Advanced Study (1943–45), spent about a decade at the University of Chicago (1949-1960), and then moved to University of California, Berkeley, where he cofounded the Mathematical S

RELIGION AS REVOLUTION IN CHINESE HISTORIOGRAPHY: HU SHIH (1891-1962) ON SHEN-HUI (684-758)*

    John R. McRAE

The widely shared understanding of the role of Buddhism in Chinese history harbors profound and substantial errors deriving from the work of Hu Shih MM (1891-1962) on the monk Shen-hui $# (684-758). Although Hu's research on Shen-hui was crucially important to the study of the Ch'an or Zen tradition as that field developed over the twentieth century, its influence and even its importance within the context of Hu's overall agenda seems to be largely unrecognized by scholars of Chinese history in general. After introducing these contributions and analyzing Hu's misperception of Shen-hui, I will undertake a very partial survey of the legacy of his ideas and then comment on the significance of these findings for the broader understanding of
