Timothy James McIlrath (born November 3, 1978) is an American rock musician. He is the lead singer, rhythm guitarist, songwriter and co-founder of the punk rock band Rise Against. He is vegetarian and straight edge.
Early and personal life
[edit]McIlrath was born in 1978 to Jim and Michelle McIlrath. He attended Rolling Meadows High School in Rolling Meadows, Illinois.[1] In college (Northeastern Illinois University), McIlrath majored in English and Sociology.[2] In his junior year,[2] he met Joe Principe at a Sick of It All concert. Principe asked McIlrath to sing over a few tracks that he and Dan Wleklinski had recorded.[3] It was at this time that Transistor Revolt was formed.[2] McIlrath left college after Transistor Revolt was signed onto Fat Wreck Chords in 1999.[2] In the fall of 2020, McIlrath returned to college to finish his Sociology degree.[2]

He is known for his versatile voice, and is able to sing softly, scratchy and frantic, or an all out scream. He is also a competent guitarist; during Rise Against's time without a second guitarist, McIlrath filled this role.
Timothy J. McIlrath was born in 1978 in Indianapolis, Indiana. At a young age he read books such as 1984 by George Orwell, and A Brave New World, which would later influence his later work. As a child in Catholic (Our Lady of the Wayside) school in Arlington Heights, IL, he was taunted for having one brown eye and one blue eye, known as heterochromia. He began his musical career in his teenage years; he was very active in the Chicago local alternative rock/punk scene.
