Josie Fraser
Professor Josie Fraser joined The Open University in March 2017 but describes her interest in the University and its mission as 'long-term' after being a tutor on an OU MSc course back in the early 2000s. This was an experience that influenced her teaching for many years. Josie was previously Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics before taking up the Deputy Vice-Chancellor role from 1 January 2019.
Josie started her academic career as a neurobiologist, with interests in animal behaviour and treatments for neurological and psychiatric disorders. Her BSc degree (Leeds) and PhD (Bradford) were followed by research posts at the Medical Research Council, the University of Cambridge and the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where Josie was part of an international team at the cutting edge of brain scanning techniques. Josie's focus shifted towards teaching and making a difference to a wide range of students from varied backgrounds, including as Senior Lecturer and Associate Dean (Learning & Teaching) at the University of Bradford.

Born and educated in New York, Josie Spencer studied sculpture in Florence, at the Academia della Sculptura with Antonio Berti. At Sarah Lawrence College, New York, Josie studied sculpture with Ezio Martinelli and art history with William Rubin, Curator of the Museum of Modern Art.
Josie then furthered her knowledge of sculpture and antiquities in Greece, Turkey, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, India and the former USSR.
Before becoming a student at the New York Studio School for Drawing, Painting and Sculpture, she studied anatomy and drawing at the Art Students League. Josie later became a Board Member and Vice-Chair of The New York Studio School.
In the seven years before leaving New York for London, she exhibited at a number of group and one-person shows in New York at galleries in Soho and Chelsea. Josie works in her own West London studio.
