You’ve played in numerous bands, do you think there were fundamental differences between bands that have succeeded where others perhaps didn’t?
In early bands I was still finding my feet as a musician, I think success has a lot to do with how sincere you are. Elly [La Roux’s creative force and front woman] is very comfortable with who she is musically. If you really aren’t liking the direction your band is going in or how labels want you to be it’ll gradually creep up on you and you’ll fail.
One band I was in years ago, the lead singer was expected to be someone he wasn’t and although he attempted it (under the forceful hand of the record company), the band imploded.
