    Sherif Girgis joined Notre Dame Law School in 2021. His work in constitutional law and theory has appeared or is forthcoming in venues including the Columbia Law Review, the New York University Law Review, the Virginia Law Review, the University of Pennsylvania Law Review, the American Journal of Jurisprudence, the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy, the Cambridge Companion to Philosophy of Law, and the online supplements to the Harvard Law Review and the Yale Law Journal. He is coauthor of What Is Marriage? Man and Woman: A Defense (Encounter, 2012), and Debating Religious Liberty and Discrimination (Oxford University Press, 2017).

    Before joining Notre Dame, he practiced appellate and complex civil litigation at Jones Day in Washington, D.C., having earlier served as a law clerk to Justice Samuel Alito of the U.S. Supreme Court and Judge Thomas Griffith of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C.     Professor Sherif Girgis joined the faculty of Notre Dame Law School this fall as an associate professor in criminal law, jurisprudence, and religious liberty. Before coming here, he practiced law at Jones Day in D.C. and clerked for Justice Samuel Alito of the United States Supreme Court. He earned his J.D. from Yale Law School, a master’s degree in philosophy from the University of Oxford, and is completing his Ph.D. in philosophy at Princeton University, where he also did his undergraduate studies in philosophy.

    He now serves as a faculty advisor for the Irish Rover, and so the Rover has the pleasure of introducing Professor Girgis to the broader Notre Dame community. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

    Rover: Professor Girgis, we’re very glad you’ve joined us at Notre Dame. What is so appealing about Notre Dame and its law school?

    Girgis: It’s very hard to find a school that combines its level of excellence and international reputation with its level of Catholicism.
