The Timeless Beauty of “Recuerdos de la Alhambra” by Francisco Tárrega
<< GO BACK
“Recuerdos de la Alhambra,” composed by Spanish virtuoso Francisco Tárrega in 1896, is one of the most beloved and iconic pieces in the classical guitar repertoire. Known for its mesmerizing tremolo technique, the piece captures the spirit and grandeur of the Alhambra, the famed Moorish palace in Granada, Spain. This timeless composition has become a favorite among both performers and listeners, blending technical difficulty with emotional depth, and has been performed by some of the greatest guitarists in history.
At Siccas Guitars, we had the privilege of recording this masterpiece with the renowned classical guitarist Ana Vidović (see video at the end of this article).
The Composer: Francisco Tárrega
Francisco Tárrega (1852-1909) is often considered the father of modern classical guitar. His contributions to the guitar’s repertoire and technique are invaluable, with “Recuerdos de la Alhambra” standing as one of his crowning achievements. Tárrega, who developed the tremolo technique to a new level of mastery, used it to give the guitar a sustaining, almost harp-like quality, which he showcased brilliantly in this piece.
