    It was first synthesized in by Austrian chemist Othmar Zeidler, but it wasn’t until that Swiss chemist, Paul Hermann Müller discovered DDT’s use as an insecticide, a substance that could be used to kill insects. Since there were a lot of diseases people were getting from insects, such as malaria and typhus, this was an important discovery. DDT was used in the second half of WWII to limit spread of these insect-borne diseases among civilians and troops, and was made available to the public in the United States by October , where it was promoted for use as agricultural and household pesticide. Müller actually won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in for this seemingly very useful discovery.

    I’ve cracked on with the oil paintings for OCG this week. Last weekend I also managed to frame 6 of the watercolours also due to go to OCG.

    I’ve got 5 big ones ready now. They still need the edges painting, varnishing, signing and stringing on the back but the main works done. I intended them to be fairly loose in style but they’ve turned out a little more realistic than I’d intended. They are still fairly loosely painted but the problem is that I feel, when painting Lake District mountains that they have to be reasonably accurate. People do notice if they’re not. I can get away with a bit more creativity with foreground and details but the mountain ranges, because they are so well known,  have to resemble the actual thing. Skies are skies and intrinsically abstract in nature. I like to make them interesting,  so they’ve all got decent skies.

    The”Derwent Valley” painting is the loosest. I painted it in 2 hours. Funnily enough, I like it the most. As I’ve said before, when painting “wet into wet” in oils you can end up with a muddy mess. Using the drying medium means that the thinner paint layers dry quite quickly (the impasto ie. thicker layers, take longer). I am impatient and once in the flow like to complete as much of the picture in one go. I do occasionall
