Egon Schiele is an artist who comes with a warning label for those unfamiliar with his paintings, especially his life painting. Forget academic, chocolate-box treatment of the figure but think expressive and confrontational, raw and unidealised, then throw in an immorality scandal too. He created works that “focused on themes of sexuality and death, ugliness, masking, sickness and transformation”*, which? isn’t what many want from art today, nevermind 100 years ago.

Egon Schiele (1890-1918) is one of the most important artists of the early 20th century and a central figure of Austrian Expressionism.
This exhibition, held at The Courtauld Gallery from 23 October 2014 to 18 January 2015, brought together an outstanding group of the artist’s nudes to chart his ground-breaking approach during his short but urgent career.
Schiele’s technical virtuosity, highly original vision and unflinching depictions of the naked figure distinguish these works as being among his most significant contributions to the development of modern art.
This sharply-focused exhibition presented a major opportunity to see more than thirty of these radical works assembled from international public and private collections.
