Donald W. Mays
Donald W. Mays, 67, of Anderson, passed away August 21, 2014 at his residence following a brief illness.
He was born Feb. 27, 1947 in Portland, Indiana, the son of Everett and Juanita Mays and the grandson of William and Ruth Via and George and Dawn Mays. He was a graduate of Portland High School in 1965 and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Ball State, where he had made the Dean’s List.
He was a US Air Force veteran (1966-1970) with the rank of Sergeant. He was trained in several specialties including, a weapons mechanic supervisor, electrical armament, jungle survival, and specialized warfare. He was an AC-47 “Spooky” Gunship gunner stationed at Pleiku, where they flew into Viet Nam, Laos and Cambodia. His last duty assignment was 305th Air Refueling Wing, Strategic Air Command at Grissom AFB. He received several commendations including: The Viet Nam Service Medal; The Air Force Commendation Medal with a 4 Oak Leaf Cluster; and the Distinguished Flying Cross with a 5 Oak Leaf Cluster and others.

It’s time to bring it back to some soul. I forget, from time to time, that this site is called Soul Sides and while I’m more than happy to bring out the jazz, funk, hip-hop, rock, etc. sometimes, what you need in your life is just some goddamn good soul.
This is the story behind today’s post…one of my favorite 45s is this gospel-soul single called “Keep My Baby Warm” which I originally put up back during the Soul Hut collaboration of Oct. 04. I found this single randomly at a store in S.F. and I just loved how it perfectly fused soulful gospel with a surprisingly strong rhythm section – one of the best I had ever heard. Since then, I’ve been trying to find the album it appeared on (assuming there was one) and the other week, I finally got my hands on it.
Some background: Charles and Annette are two of the children of Brother Joe May, a prolific and renown gospel singer of the 1950s and ’60s.
